Morning Routines: Matthew Pike from Buckets & Spades

As part of an ongoing Morning Routines feature, I've been talking to a different industry expert, adventurer, pioneer or influencer about how their morning sets them up for the day ahead. For our third instalment, I caught up with Matthew Pike from menswear, design and lifestyle blog, Buckets & Spades.

Along with his friend Nik (who I'm sure will be featuring in this series soon), Mat runs one of the best mens fashion and lifestyle blogs coming out of the UK right now. We share a lot of similar interests and if you're following me on twitter (which you should be) you've probably seen some of our off-tangent conversations about Goldeneye N64 or our shared love of Redwing boots. Mat has a great presence on social media and he's constantly pushing out fresh posts which I just can't get enough of. His latest venture, Editions, delivers a curated collection of inspiring content to your inbox every week. Here's how Mat's mornings pan out:

"My job is a little hard to describe, so I usually find it easiest to say I’m a freelance writer. My partner, Hollie, says that doesn’t really do me justice, but to say I’m a writer, photographer, blogger, stylist, marketeer, social media dude, doesn’t really have a ring to it. So I’m going to describe a regular morning for a freelancer writer based in North West England. I get woken up at around 7:30am, by my silent rumble-emmiting watch alarm by Withings - since switching from a iPhone alarm to waking up in silence I know I never want to go back. I head down for breakfast, but catch up on BBC1 news for 20 minutes first. Breakfast is usually porridge + honey, or Weetabix + honey. Basically honey on everything in my household.

I’ll scan through Twitter, Instagram, Facebook + emails while I’m trying to watch the news. I find myself taking in stuff less these days, so I really should limit myself on the old social media. I’ve been thinking about deleting my Facebook for a while, but it never happens. I slip into my wool slippers by Armor-Lux, which were a gift from my old job in Manchester. I’ll fire up the computer at about 9am, and get on with today’s do-to list. I don’t drink coffee in the morning, I stick to tap water or tea ‘till at least lunch time. Currently I use an app called Todoist, which arranges my daily tasks like no other, but I still have a Field Notes notepad and pen handy, for making notes or lists. I’m a little obsessed with pens lately, and my latest addition to the desk is a Swiss-made Paul Smith x Caran d'ache pen, in dusty pink, which Hollie bought me for Christmas.

I’ll get changed into something a little comfier, but I don’t generally get properly showered and dressed until I’ve been for a run, or workout. I try to get to the gym four times a week, but still trying to work on my running. I don’t enjoy it, but Nik (the other half of Buckets & Spades) is a beast, and seems to be always on the run. If I have a spare 15 minutes I throw in a bit of stretching and yoga, around 11am. After that I’ll already by thinking of what to have for lunch. By 12pm I’m looking at publish a new blog post, and getting it ready to share across social media. The house smells like coffee from then on in."

Thanks for sharing your morning routine, Mat. I'm looking forward to seeing you guys in Sheffield sometime soon.
