Best Made Co never fails to impress with its latest offerings. Last week they announced the latest addition to their ever expanding collection of hard-wearing and well-thought-out utilitarian goods: The American Longbow.
Best Made has been one of my favourite brands since I fist saw their painted axes a few years ago. I visited their store at 36 White when I was in New York recently and stocked up on some essentials, while I was there I fell in love with the whole brand aesthetic and I was blown away by the quality of products on offer. The American Longbow seems to me to be the perfect companion to their American Felling axe, at home on the office wall or leant-to in the corner of your cabin.
Favorited by the most storied archers in recorded history, the American Longbow is an object of grace and power. Whether chosen as an introduction to archery or for the pursuit of mastery, the string-follow Longbow offers unparalleled accuracy and smooth shooting.
This is the bow that every generation learns with, and the bow that reconnects a seasoned archer with the romance of casting arrows. Unencumbered by technical aids, the American Longbow patiently teaches true form. Without sights, pulleys, or counterweights, the archer learns an instinctive style, shooting naturally and with grace.

The release of a string-follow bow is forgiving and dependable, allowing for versatility on the range and in the field. The bow does not strain to pull the string past its centerline, resulting in a comfortable and confident feel in the hand.
Here's the full specification:
- Hickory core
- Black fiberglass laminate
- Bubinga riser
- String-follow
- Calf hair arrow rest
- Reinforced tips
- Flemish twist Dacron string
- Brass nock point
- Black hand-stitched leather grip
- Handmade in the USA
According to Best Made Co, a bow’s draw weight is determined by the construction of the limbs. Typically, the more layers in the limb laminate, the heavier the draw weight. Though it is tempting to reach for the most powerful bow available, the sport of archery requires muscles not typically used. It is crucial to develop these muscles along with technique, and over-bowing will lead to an unpleasant and disappointing experience. A new archer will learn quickest on a light bow, and will be encouraged to continue the pursuit.
The American Longbow comes in three sizes for varying levels of experience:
25" - Choose this bow as an introduction to archery, or for casual backyard shooting that anyone can enjoy.
35" - Intermediate target bow, average for female archers. For those who are already comfortable with shooting technique.
45" - Average for experienced male archers, legal for most hunting. It will take several months of practice before a new archer can attempt this weight.
