30 Skills to Learn by Your 30th Birthday

Thirty is the last milestone of a young man's youth. By now you're standing on your own two feet, paying your way and living your own life. Hopefully you know where you're headed and who you are. There's some skills I've picked up along the way on my journey towards thirty (I'm not quite there yet) that I've found make life easier and more fun. I'd like to share them with you. Here's 'Thirty by Thirty' - 30 Things You Should Be Able To Do By Now.

You're nearly thirty! You should probably be able to:

1. Fell a tree, properly - With an axe in the woods, on your own, when you need firewood.

2. Sharpen a knife - In the kitchen or in the wild, a blunt knife is more dangerous than a sharp one.

3. Build a proper fire - One that lights first time and burns smokeless all night.

4. Change a wheel - On your own car or a strangers, don't be the guy who calls roadside assistance for this.

5. Dance - With your wife, partner, mother or a stranger. You look stupid stood against the wall.

6. Hold your beer - There's nothing worse than a drunk.

7. Hold your tongue - Know when saying nothing says everything.

8. Drink whiskey neat - The way it was meant to be enjoyed.

9. Throw a punch - You'll need this one day when someone can't hold their beer or their tongue.

10. Throw a party - An evening with friends, well catered with a well stocked bar.

11. Apologise, sincerely - We all make mistakes, recognise yours.

12. Handle a powerful car - With great power comes great responsibility. This takes practice.

13. Shine your boots - Keep your boots clean and waterproof and they'll take you anywhere.

14. Run ten miles - Just enough to get you out of danger and then some.

15. Walk fifty - Hit the trail and see something, go somewhere, enjoy the slow pace of life unabridged.

16. Shoot a gun - Everyone thinks they know how do this but its not as simple as it looks on film.

17. Shave with a cutthroat - Nothing gets closer or scares you more.

18. Tell someone you love them, and mean it - When the time is right, you'll know.

19. Tell your father how you really feel about him - Good, bad or ugly, the truth will set you both free.

20. Keep your phone in your pocket - Make conversation with those around you, enjoy their company.

21. Cook one really good meal - For yourself or someone else. Do one thing really well.

22. Train a dog - Your dog is your best friend, train him well and he will be loyal and loving.

23. Play an instrument - Everyone needs a way to express themselves / a half decent party trick.

24. Admit defeat - There's no shame in defeat as long as you dust yourself off and get back on your horse.

25. Have a plan B - Things never turn out quite the way you had them planned.

26. Read a map and compass - This could save your life one day. Master it.

27. Read a classic - Pick one of the greats and read it cover to cover, it could change your life.

28. Camp - Off the beaten track and in the wild. Camp is home.

29. Take a good photograph - One day you'll want to look back and remember this.

30. Rejoice, O' young man, in thy youth - Live in the moment.
