Sheffield's Steam Yard Coffee Co

Sheffield is host to handful of really high quality independent coffee shops, each with their own unique atmosphere and decor. They all serve excellent coffee and they’re all on my hit list when I need a caffeine fix. My favourite though, for reasons that’ll be come clear as you read on, is the Steam Yard Coffee Co in Aberdeen Court. I've drunk the world's 'best' coffee in Rome, Naples and New York but, for me, nowhere comes close to Steam Yard.

In the heart of the Devonshire quarter, home to Sheffield's independent boutiques, bars and eateries, you'll find one of the most original coffee shops you're likely to visit. Pay a visit to Steam Yard and you'll find a cadre of friendly and attentive baristas, excellent Square Mile coffee and a mouthwatering selection of fresh pastries, snacks and sandwiches (just wait till you try the fronuts).

The coffee shop was the brainchild of friends Nick Pears and Matt Cottrill and since it opened in 2014, Steam Yard has become my de facto meeting place and coffee spot. The decor has an definite Americana twist; concrete flooring meets retro leather seating and the shelves are lined with books on New York, classic menswear and hollywood icons along with assorted motorcycle memorablia. The walls feature original artworks by local artists and there's enough seating for even the busiest Saturday Brunch.

The menu is beautiful in its simplicity; bagels, toast, grilled sandwiches and pastries. The donuts, baked by Depot Bakery, are seriously next level. In addition to an excellent selection of donuts pastries there's the 'Fronut', a sugar donut stuffed with a choice of local ice creams. In typical Americana style, they're now offering S'mores hot donuts filled with a killer combination of peanut butter, Nutella and marshmallow. For £3 you can pick up my personal favourite - The all-American 'Steve McQueen' special - a ring donut and a coffee, pictured below.

One thing that sets Steam Yard part from most of Sheffield's other coffee shops is the fact It's totally dog friendly. Infact, from my experience, dogs are positively encouraged to come down and have their photo taken and a enjoy a few bites of biscotti while there owners catch up over a flat white.

Steve enjoying his signature snack. You could look this cool at Steam Yard.

If you're a Sheffield resident or just visiting for the day, I highly recommend you pay a visit to Steam Yard and enjoy a great coffee in a great atmosphere and even a couple of their signature donuts.

You can find Steam Yard in Aberdeen Court, 95-97 Division Street, Sheffield S1 4GE
