I've been talking to industry experts, adventurers, pioneers and influencers about how their morning sets them up for the day ahead. This time I've caught up with Gather Outdoors founder Tim Frenneaux about how his mornings pan out.
I first came across Gather on Instagram a few months ago and I was really impressed by how Tim is leveraging the power of social to make great products affordable through sharing. I've been talking to him a lot recently and his passion for the great outdoors and spirit of adventure really resonated with me - it turns out we've got a lot in common.
Tim founded Gather in order to help people enjoy the outdoors and to support those who are creating products that enhance, rather than exploit, our natural resources. The unique thing about the Gather shop is the Crew Buy option that lets you split purchases between your crew and save up to 90% while doing so. You can also earn 20% off clothing, luggage and accessories through Gather's Social Dividend scheme. Pretty cool! Tim has some big plans for 2016 and I'm looking forward to seeing whats in store for Gather in the near future.
Here's how Tim kickstarts his day:
"I have a pretty fixed morning routine, the peril of having two small kids that don't understand the meaning of the words “lie in”.
At bang on 6am almost every morning I'm downstairs making them both breakfast. They have two different types of cereal combined in one bowl, whilst I listen to Radio 4. I love those clipped middle class BBC tones. We always take a radio with us when we go camping or away in our classic caravan. There's just something about Radio 4 that sets the day off on a cerebral note.
If I'm lucky the kids will ignore their clocks and get up early. I don't really mind as I get to tune in to Radio 4's tweet of the day at 5.55am. I love to hear the birdsong and the story behind it. If it's a Sunday, I tune in to whatever random stuff is playing on Radio 1 to chill out the hyped up club kids. I'm a retired club kid, with an eclectic taste in leftfield electronica.
For breakfast I always have a strong cup of Yorkshire Gold tea with half a grapefruit and a couple of slices of granary toast with a thick coating of proper marmalade. None of that overly sweet rubbish. It needs to be proper tart, with large chunks of peel. That's unless I'm camping and planning a days adventuring, when breakfast is always porridge. It never fails to set me up for the day. I've never understood those folk who can't eat first thing. If I don't eat, I'm grumpy as hell.
I have a golden rule never to check anything on my iPhone until after I've eaten. No emails, Instagram or anything, whatever was going on the night before. I also try and leave it for at least 30 minutes before I go to bed on a night. Screens give off light of the same wavelength as daylight. It confuses your internal body clock if you check them too late at night.
Once I'm up and showered, I always have a good strong cup of coffee before I get to work for the day. I share it with my wife. Its a regular part of our morning ritual. The odd occasion we forget to stock up and discover we're out of coffee always makes for a bad start to the day."
Thanks for sharing your morning routine, Tim!
