This year I've been talking to industry experts, adventurers, pioneers and influencers about how their morning sets them up for the day ahead. After a good run of posts, and to celebrate the one year anniversary of The All Night Listening Post's inception, I've decided to close the Morning Routines feature with a personal exploration of my own mornings.
Depending on the day of the week, I can have very different mornings. Weekdays mean an early start and an hour commute to Leeds from Sheffield - my day job is at the Royal Armouries, which is a pretty cool place to work and well worth the drive time.
I set my alarm for 6am every morning to give myself enough time to get re-aquainted with the world after a good night's sleep. I've been trying to minimise time spent on my phone, especially last thing at night and first thing in the morning so I'll try my best to ignore the notifications and emails and head down to the kitchen to start the day like any true northerner - with a cup of Yorkshire tea. I'll also wake my whippet George up and make him some breakfast. It's a little bit early for me to have anything to eat so I normally grab something on my way into the office.
Once I've made the tea, I'll head up to the attic office space and tune in to Radio 4's Today Program to find out whats happening in the world. The dog generally follows me up and sits snoozing while I catch up on digital affairs on my Macbook. I check the news and Twitter to find out whats happening in the world and check up on a couple of blogs that I keep a close eye on. If there's not much happening on the radio, I might turn to the Monocle Daily podcast to get a wider view of world affairs while I get showered and dressed. Once I'm all set, I'll take the dog out for a walk round the park just before I leave for work.
Weekends are a bit different. In my previous job I worked a lot of weekends, 11 years without a weekend off is a bit of a killer. Now that I'm a nine-to-fiver I get to enjoy some quality time with my girlfriend Fern and the dog so on weekends I still rise early but I dial it down with a steady walk up to the shop for a paper and some fresh milk for brewing Cappuccinos. I'll either head up to the attic or get back in bed to digest the papers and revel in the novelty of not being at work on a Saturday morning. Glorious.
Thanks for reading my morning routine, I hope you've enjoyed the series. If you've not seen them all, you can check out the rest of the routines below:
