Now, it's not often I hold a book in my hands and swear out loud, but that was the scale of my reaction when I opened my copy of The Backbone of Britain by my friends, The With Love Project. I was blown away by the design, quality and attention to detail; I'm a collector of nice books, coffee table tomes and high quality volumes but this book, this is next level.
With Love was founded just over two years ago by Art Director Chris Roberts and Photographer Rob Evans. Their search to find people who produce things with a passion and a purpose has taken them from the Outer Hebrides to the tip of Cornwall. During their epic journey they asked everyone they met the same question: Why do you do what you do?
The Backbone of Britain is the end result of their trip as well as a lot of hard work and a well received Kickstarter campaign. The book explorers the skills and craftsmanship of some of the UK’s most unique, traditional makers through fascinating personal stories from a diverse range of unique artists, designers, builders and doers. The pair met nearly 40 inspiring individuals on their trip and were humbled by the openness and enthused by the work ethic and attitude of everyone they met. Traditional furniture makers, motorcycle manufacturers, wheelwrights and tailors were all keen to open their doors and share their way of life and what they're producing.
This book is everything Rob promised me it was going to be when I first met him almost a year ago: Beautifully bound and presented with high quality papers from GF Smith, an arresting and perfectly balanced layout alongside stunning photography and an unrivalled story that truly is something special. The run was limited to 1000 copies, all individually numbered with a list of Kickstarter contributors at the back - it was good to see so many friends and acquaintances on the list, everyone on there is in very good company.
I'm going to stop gushing now, but the book really is that good so, if you missed out on the Kickstarter then there's a limited number available on the With Love Project shop so grab one while you still can!
